There are specific side effects of smoking that affect men’s bodies and others that affect women’s. In this article we explore the main issues facing men and teenagers who smoke – impotence and sperm damage.
Impotence
One of the most debilitating side effects of smoking that men suffer is the likelihood of eventual impotence. The longer and the more heavily that a man smokes, the more difficulty he may have in achieving or maintaining an erection in mid life. Studies show that this is due to the constriction of the tiny blood vessels to the penis.
Research carried out at Lahey Hitchcock Medical Center, Burlington, Massachusetts, revealed that smoking causes a significant reduction in the number of spontaneous erections that occur naturally during sleep. These erections are one of the most significant indications of the quality of blood flow and good sexual health. When the intensity of these erections decrease, this indicates a risk that erectile dysfunction may develop.
Erectile dysfunction is something many men dread. It can lead to breakdown in relationships, loss of confidence, anxiety and / or depression. The good news is that when a man quits smoking for as little as 24 hours there is a dramatic increase in the quality of spontaneous erections and the ability to perform once more.
Damage to future generations
Did you know that nicotine can damage sperm? If the DNA cells in sperm become damaged, it is impossible to repair them whilst you’re still smoking. Some of the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes may result in gene mutations that can cause miscarriage, birth defects, cancer, and other health problems for any future children.
However, men produce sperm in a 74-day cycle which means that male organism is cleaning sperm cells regularly, so even though the side effects of smoking can be so devastating, quitting will clear up these potential problems in just two to three months.
Teenagers
The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory at the University of California conducted a study into the effects of smoking among teenagers. Because smoking affects the quality of sperm so greatly; those teenagers who smoke heavily may never be able to sire children and, if they do they risk their children suffering from various genetic defects as a direct effect of the DNA damage passed on from the father.
Smoking will also aggravate any other medical problems a man may have, whether they are of a sexual nature or not.
So if you want to feel fitter, have a healthy sex life and healthy children, do consider quitting. It doesn’t have to be difficult if you find the right way for you – not necessarily the quickest way but a method that helps you with the psychological and physiological side effects of smoking.
