Side Effects Of Smoking |Diseases Caused Or Made Worse by Smoking

The side effects of smoking are many

Firstly let’s cover the side effects of smoking on both men and women.  Another article will relate to those side effects that relate to only men or only women.  I warn you it’s not going to be an easy read.

The factual list that follows may help you make that all important decision for yourself and your loved ones.

        • In the USA there are 440,000 deaths caused by smoking every year.  That’s 36,666 per month, 8,461 per week, 1,205 per day, 50 per hour.  This figure is taken for all smoking related diseases.
  • In 2006 158,639 people died of lung cancer in the USA and around 30,000 people die of lung cancer in the UK each year.  More than 8 in 10 cases are directly due to smoking.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). More than 126,000 people in the USA and about 25,000 people in the UK die from this horrible debilitating disease each year.  They are often ill for many years prior to their death.  Over 8 in 10 of these deaths are due to smoking.
  • Heart disease is the biggest killer illness.  Nearly 570 thousand souls in the USA and 120,000 in the UK die each year from heart disease. About 1 in 7 of these deaths are due to smoking.  This may not sound so many but it equates to 81,500 in the USA and over 17,000 people in the UK dying each year because of just one of  the side effects of smoking.
  • Mouth cancer, nose, throat, larynx, oesophagus, pancreas and bladder cancers as well as cancers of the cervix, blood (leukaemia) and kidney are all more common in smokers.
  • Circulation. The toxins inhaled when you smoke can damage the lining of the blood vessels and affect the level of lipids (fats) in the bloodstream. This increases the risk of atheroma forming (you may have heard of it as ‘hardening’ of the arteries).   This is the main cause of heart disease, strokes, peripheral vascular disease (poor circulation of the legs), and aneurysms (swollen arteries which can burst causing internal bleeding).  All these diseases are more common in smokers.

Other Side effects of smoking which worsen symptoms

  • The following problems are worsened by smoking, even if not caused by it:  asthma, colds, flu, chest infections, tuberculosis, chronic rhinitis, diabetic retinopathy, hyperthyroidism, multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, and Crohn’s disease.

Smoking increases the risk of developing various other conditions

  • These include:  optic neuropathy, cataract, macular degeneration, cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis, psoriasis, gum disease, tooth loss, osteoporosis and Raynaud’s phenomenon.

The list above is factual.  It doesn’t express the trauma and suffering smokers and their families face every day of an illness or after the news that the patient hasn’t many more months or weeks to live.  To many who read this article the above list is a whole lot of long words that they won’t know the meaning of.  That’s not surprising because until it’s you or a loved one who is affected by the side effects of smoking you may never come across them.  I do hope you don’t.

The good news is that you can put a stop to all that now before it is too late, quit, turn back the clock and give your body a new start.
